Potential of crop mixtures to reduce pesticide use in France. A data analysis

2022

Over the last 50 years, agricultural intensification has led to simplified agricultural systemshighly dependent on fertilisers and pesticides, causing biodiversity loss, changes in the balanceof nutrients, water and soil contamination. The total amount of pesticides applied each yearin France makes it the main consumer of plant protection products in Europe, and arable cropsare currently the most pesticide-consuming production systems. Reducing pesticide use inarable crops is thus a major challenge. There is now evidence that crop diversification in time, with more diversified rotations, and in space, through crop mixtures, can help restoreecosystem services and represent a potential key lev…

Systematic review of the effects of chemical insecticides on four common butterfly families

2017

Safeguarding crop productivity by protecting crops from pest attacks entails the wide use of plant protection products that provide a quick, easy and cheap solution. The objective of this study is to understand the effects of insecticides used in agriculture on non-target butterflies, specifically on the families Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, Hesperiidae, and Papilionidae. To achieve this goal, a formal systematic review was performed according to European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) guidelines, by entering a combination of keywords on 3 online databases. Three reviewers independently extracted information on study characteristics and quality. The main results were collected and grouped by the …

Assessing human health risks from pesticide use in conventional and innovative cropping systems with the BROWSE model

2017

Background: Reducing the risks and impacts of pesticide use on human health and on the environment is one of the objectives of the European Commission Directive 2009/128/EC in the quest for a sustainable use of pesticides. This Directive, developed through European national plans such as Ecophyto plan in France, promotes the introduction of innovative cropping systems relying, for example, on integrated pest management. Risk assessment for human health of the overall pesticide use in these innovative systems is required before the introduction of those systems to avoid that an innovation becomes a new problem. Objectives: The objectives of this work were to assess and to compare (1) the hum…

General framework for assessing the risks for in-soil organisms exposed to Plant Protection Products (PPP)

2017

The Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues (PPR) has been tasked by EFSA to revise the SANCO guidance Document on Terrestrial Ecotoxicology which is currently used for conducting the risk assessment for terrestrial non-target organisms, except for birds and mammals and non-target arthropods. For each group of organisms, the PPR Panel first summarises the science behind the respective risk assessment in a scientific opinion and, in a second step, EFSA will develop practical guidance on how to perform the risk assessment. The main scope of the revision is to take into consideration: (i) the entry into force of the Regulation 1107/2009 replacing the Directive 91/414/EEC; (ii) th…

Effect of commercially available Plant Defence Stimulators (PDS) on human innate immunity

2014

PDS (Plant defence stimulators) constitute a recent alternative to pesticides used for crop protection. These compounds called elicitors are of diverse nature, but they all act by stimulating innate immune system of plants. So, plants can better fight pathogens. Furthermore, there are many similarities in pathogen perception systems and cellular signalling in plants and animals. It is well established that many elicitors stimulate both human and plant innate immunity (Zipfel and Felix, 2005). Therefore, it is likely that human innate immunity could be modulated by PDS. The aim of this study is to evaluate pro/anti-inflammatory activity of five different commercially available PDS on human c…
